The narcissist, therefore, is someone who needs appreciation and consideration from others, as a drug addict needs its daily dose to be able to move forward. He reacts exactly like any addict when he lacks this drug, developing real abstinence syndromes and psychological "monkeys" who require an extra dose to calm the anxiety, disappointment and nervousness he presents when he sees things aren't going out as they should. In narcissist logic, when the number of fascinated and adoring followers who applaud their star performance decreases, they feel the anxiety of being exposed. Therefore, narcissists systematically create professions that provide them with that external revenue.
