If I were the greater devil and would like to keep people as far away from God as possible without they realize, I would not make it a tool of blatant denial, hypocrisy and division. Instead, I would make people obsessed with subtle distractions, small changes in their approach that seem harmless, but that in time they never create a massive distance from God.
