The true saint sees service in every human encounter. Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati exemplified this teaching, answering "daso smi" (I am your servant) to each person who offered him reverences, without exception. True humility does not distinguish between disciples, visitors or strangers. When someone bowed before him, this great spiritual teacher also bowed, recognizing the divinity in each soul. A devotee, observing how many times he had to bow his guru, decided not to do physical reverences to give him rest. Surprisingly, this compassionate attitude was approved by the elder devotees, since it was born of genuine love.
