In the Vedic tradition, there are four stages of life, known as ashramas: student, married, retired and renouncing (sannyasi). However, some philosophies, such as the mayavadi (Advaita Vedānta), tend to exalt the sannyasi as the only valid path for spiritual realization, considering the other ashramas only prior or insignificant steps. Under this logic, only those who renounce everything deserve spiritual recognition, thus generating an exclusive division: “or you are sannyasi, or you are nothing.” On the other hand, vaishnavism, the devotional tradition centered on love and service to God, values and recognizes the spiritual potential of each stage of life.
